REHAU Helps Waldsee BioHaus Achieve North America's First German Passivhaus Certification
Educational Facility Will Bridge Efforts with Germany to Bring New Energy Efficiency Practices to the U.S.
Leesburg, Va., – As part of an international team of supporting foundations and fellow sponsors, REHAU announces its participation in the construction of the BioHaus Environmental Living Center at Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minn. The center, a part of the educational facility’s German language village of Waldsee, is also the first-ever certified German Passivhaus in North America, and the first Passivhaus in the world constructed in such a harsh climate region. It provides a level of energy efficiency beyond that of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standard, using 85 percent less energy than comparable U.S. structures. Results from stringent air-tightness testing for official certification by Germany’s Passivhaus Institute also showed the BioHaus to be the tightest building in the U.S. to date – a notable achievement in light of the structure’s location in an extreme climate zone.
