Snow and Ice Melting System from REHAU a Sure Bet for New Falls Casino

Snow and Ice Melting System from REHAU a Sure Bet for New Falls Casino
An innovative hydronic snow and ice melting system has enjoyed an extremely successful inaugural year at the Niagara Fallsview Casino and Resort, a part of the Niagara Tourism Gateway Project in Ontario, Canada.

Featuring RAUPEX® cross-linked polyethylene (PEXa) pipe manufactured by REHAU, the approximately 125,000-square-foot system was installed in parking lot areas and walkways to melt the accumulation of snow and ice caused by the constant spray from Niagara Falls. The system is designed to clear snow and ice from vehicle and pedestrian pathways quickly and efficiently. Brian Mosher, executive director of facilities at Niagara Fallsview, couldn’t be happier with the performance of the system.

“The system performed extremely well over this past winter and met all of my expectations,” said Mosher. “We did not have to do any ice or snow removal on the sidewalks that were equipped with the snow and ice melting system. Furthermore, we were the only property in the area to have sidewalks clear 100 percent of the time.”
The system melts snow and ice when heated fluid is circulated throughout the RAUPEX pipe, which is installed underneath or within an outdoor ground surface. The system facilitates snow removal, minimizing the need to apply salt or other melting agents that can corrode many surfaces. Indoor maintenance costs can also be reduced because less salt and water is tracked inside buildings. Additionally, by providing safe passage on highly trafficked walkway areas, the system can decrease the potential for liability claims against property owners.

According to Mosher, Niagara Fallsview estimates a savings of a $250,000 in snow removal costs. “In addition to the monetary savings, patrons did not have to be concerned with stepping out of car and into a pile of slush, which made the customer experience even better,” Mosher stated.

Klimatrol Environmental Systems Ltd., a REHAU technical associate, provided the parts and piping for the REHAU system, which is comprised of RAUPEX pipe, EVERLOC® fittings, industrial manifolds, and controls. For the project, three-quarter-inch RAUPEX O2 Barrier pipe was specified. The pipe provides extended system life and optimum performance under rugged conditions. It maintains its structural integrity even after repeated bending during installation, and resists conventional solvents and chemicals as well as hydrous salt and acid solutions.

Niagara Fallsview Casino and Resort works in conjunction with the Niagara Tourism Gateway Project and is the single largest investment in Niagara’s history. The complex will financially assist the city and further stimulate growth of the region. This world-class casino and resort includes two restaurants, three entertainment venues, a casino that boasts the largest gaming floor in Canada, and a resort-style hotel offering the epitome in luxury.
